Father of girl who died at the border needed an interpreter

The case is famous: a 7-year-old girl from Guatemala was detained with her father crossing into the U.S.

Shortly afterward, she died.

What isn’t as well known is that not long before she died her father, signed a paper saying she was in “good health.” But the father, who had no interpreter, speaks Q’eqchi’, an indigenous language of Guatemala. And he didn’t understand the form.

Would the girl’s life have been saved with an interpreter? We’ll never know. But it seems she didn’t have the chance.
